The conquerors of Manchester United came from 2-1 down to beat Schalke 4-2 in Gelsenkirchen in the first leg quarter final of the Europa League. We have already seen the class of the Basque side when they out played United over 2 legs and now they are in pole position to qualify for the semi finals. Llorente put Atletico 1-0 up after 20 mins before 2 goals from Raul after 22 mins and 59 mins gave Schalke the lead.
Atletico even the score when Llorente got his second of the match on 73 mins. De Marcos then swung the tie on it’s head scoring on 81 mintues with Muniain wrapping up the game on 90 mins.
Huntelaar was naturally disappointed with Schalke’s performance. He went on to say “We didn’t play well over the full 90 minutes. We didn’t take our chances. We lacked determination. Then we fell apart a bit, and could no longer impose our game.”
Despite this there is still a slim chance Schalke could reverse the scoreline in Spain and Huntelaar felt the tie wasn’t dead and buried just yet. He said “Perhaps they think that they are already through. If we keep the pressure up, we can score a quick goal and then we’ll see.
“We all need to do better, myself included.”
